No fewer than 6 people have died amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in Ghana.

The midweek "tragic" event seems to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and rushed into the entrances," stated a statement from the nation's military.

Twenty-two others were hurt, including five who are in serious state.

A large crowd had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, the capital, with the aspiration of joining the military.

Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics show, and such enlistment drives typically attract massive gatherings and frequently result in disorderly situations.

The deadline to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as a number had faced difficulties in the process.

Army spokesperson Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede took place before the event's scheduled start of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the injured in medical care.

Order has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has now started.
