The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
